Music Therapy for Anxiety Level and Quality of Life of Patients Infected by COVID-19

Abstract

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 epidemic is changing the lives around the world. COVID-19 is a dangerous and frightening disease so that many people experience anxiety disorders and decreased quality of life.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of music therapy on the level of anxiety and quality of life of patients infected by COVID-19.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: This type of research is an experimental quantitative study with a randomized controlled trial research design. The sampling technique used in this research is simple random sampling. Data analysis was performed using paired t-test and independent t-test. This study divided the subjects into two groups, namely, the intervention group as many as 51 respondents who received intervention in the form of music therapy with favorite music in the form of religious-themed music, dangdut, pop, and classical music and 51 respondents in the control group who were only given regular intervention. Data collection tool or anxiety questionnaire used Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale with a reliability of 0.893.

RESULTS: The type of this research was experimental quantitative research using a randomized controlled trial research design. The results showed that after being given music therapy, there was a decrease in anxiety level in the intervention group with an average of 18.7 (mild anxiety) and an average of 33.6 (severe anxiety) in the control group with a significance value of 0.000. In addition, music therapy significantly improved the quality of life with an average of 81.6 (very good quality of life) in the intervention group and an average of 36.7 (poor quality of life) in the control group with a significance value of 0.000.

CONCLUSIONS: Music therapy which was given to COVID-19 patients was proven to reduce anxiety and improve the patient’s quality of life.
